Escape from Emberhead
I’ve finished mapping out Alone Against the Flames, and added them to the site. This is the first of six game books based on Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition rules. Neat.
It was a tad irritating at first. The nature of COC’s skill checks combined with a game book’s requirement to pass Test 1, Test 2, and Test 3 in order to achieve X means that the chances of passing those three tests is very small. In a RPG setting there can be consequences and second chances, but in a game book it’s a lot more “nope, you failed.” Combine the two and you get a lot of “you had one chance and it’s gone” outcomes, so the village of Emberhead usually gets their sacrifice (that’s you, reader!).
That said, it was a fun time anyway. There are all sorts of grisly outcomes including being burned, summoning fire from the celestial beyond, and being killed by a bear (so more a grizzly ending than grisly, amiright?). For a mini-adventure, it doesn’t feel like they put minimal effort into it.
Now I”m looking forward to my next game book. I’m not yet sure what it will be.
