What Lies Beneath? Let’s find out

For my birthday a few months back, a friend bought me a new gamebook – What Lies Beneath by Chris Scaffidi. How cool is that? He’s so great. A couple of weeks ago I finally opened it, and have been playing it since.

It’s what it says on the cover – a dungeon crawl. And it has some really novel mechanics for resolving skill tests, such as flicking dice across the table and trying to fiddle with a series of dice to make a sequence. It has no single successful ending, but a variety off endings of various degrees of success or escape or gruesome death. Some of the endings are being cured and finding a new life among the gnomes, inciting a coup of the government that hired you, being accused of treason and being executed. Yeah, fun times.
